Runways Kilns is a lovely café with accommodation, located near Marloes Sands and on the edge of Marloes Mere. It’s within easy reach of our four self-catering, holiday cottages in St Davids, Pembrokeshire
It has been converted from a group of traditional old farm buildings and provides extensive views across fields and out to sea… a total delight!
The café, itself, used to be the piggery and the accommodation used to be the hayloft and henhouse. It all dates back to the 16th century, when it was owned by a family by the name of ‘Runwa’. They had a ‘Kiln’ on the premises, which was used for toasting barley... hence the name ‘Runways Kiln’.
Marloes Mere is a wonderful location to visit with beautiful beaches and is part of the Marloes Peninsula, which has a wide variety of wildlife and plants as well as bird life. The wildlife nearby includes mallards, wigeon and pintails, as well as dragonflies, bush-crickets and butterflies.
The menu is inspiring and serves fresh, locally sourced and seasonal dishes, often designed for sharing. The main focus is on the flavour of the area using ingredients which include local crab, sorrel and lamb, often served in a wholemeal pitta with mint and harissa.
The dishes include meat, seafood and vegetarian options, as well as drinks (beer and wine) and deserts, cream teas and hot waffles with ice cream.
The accommodation is placed in simple and cosy converted barns. It comprises two units named The Hayloft and The Henhouse. They sleep between two and five people.
Above everything else, Runways Kiln is a wonderful base for exploring the spectacular coastal scenery. This is another ‘must’ to visit… a lovely place to eat near St Davids.
